Chevrolet Corvette Sales On The Uptick After Years Of Downturn

2011-Chevrolet-Corvette-057
Automotive News is reporting that the Chevrolet Corvette sales are on the rebound after being on a steady decline since 2006. At their peak 5 years ago, Chevrolet moved 36,518 Corvettes. By contrast, Chevrolet only sold 12,624 in 2010.
The first two months of 2011 have seen a 13 percent sales increase compared to January and February 2010, but we shouldn’t get too optimistic yet. The current generation Vette is already long in the tooth, and even though the Corvette (in certain trims) can return just under 30 mpg on the highway and 18 mpg around town, high gas prices could still torpedo America’s favorite sports car as consumers recoil against the idea of big V8s and profligate sports cars.

Jeff Gordon To Appear In CARS 2

NASCAR star Jeff Gordon will appear in the upcoming Pixar film Cars 2 as Jeff Gorvette, a Corvette C6.R, and his role will be more than just a cameo.
The Gorvette character (if it can be called that) will be positioned as a rival to protagonist Lightning McQueen. While the connection between NASCAR and Corvette Racing will be downplayed for the film, the ‘Vette will still wear Gordon’s signature #24.
Gordon won’t be the only NASCAR star in the movie either. Darrell Waltrip will be reprising his role as color commentator Darrell Cartrip, and will take the form of a 1980′s era NASCAR vehicle.

The 10 Most Expensive Cars in the World

Most people in modern society have a car.  Once a luxury for the amusement of the ultra-rich, automobiles are now considered more or less a necessity, and all social classes have access to a vehicle.  However, despite this dramatic change over the course of the car’s history, the market for extravagant vehicles has not disappeared.  Here are ten cars that only the richest of the rich could even dream of owning.  Still, that does not have to stop you from imagining the look on your mechanic’s face if you brought one of these bad boys into your local San Diego auto shop for a tune up.
10. Koenigsegg CCXR ($1.2 million USD): This Swedish car is the first FlexFuel sports car.  It can run on gasoline or ethanol for cleaner emissions.  It also makes use of Bioethanol to boost its horsepower over 200.
9. Maybach Landaulet ($1.4 million): This German car resurrects an early 20th design feature now in disuse:  the roof over the back seat is convertible, while it remains fixed over the driver.  These cars are custom-built and can be ordered with designs like a coat of arms, etc.
8. Lamborghini Reventon ($1.4 million): Only 20 models were ever built.  It holds the distinction of being both the most expensive and most powerful Lamborghini ever made, taking only about 3 seconds to reach 60 miles per hour.  It can reach a top speed of 211 mph.
7. Pagani Zonda Cinque ($1.4 million): This Italian powerhouse has a V12 engine, 678 horsepower, a top speed of 217 mph, and can go from 0 to 60 in 3 seconds.  “Cinque” is Italian for “five,” which is how many were built, so do not expect to get one for yourself.
6. Bugatti Veyron 16.4 ($1.5 million): With a distinctive two-tone finish, a top speed of 253 mph, and the ability to reach 60 mph in 2.5 seconds, this car will not disappoint those who can afford it.
5. Aston Martin One-77 ($1.6 million): A limited edition car with only 77produced (none are still available), this car has won numerous design awards.
4. Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport ($2 million): Yep, you guessed it – an even more luxurious version of the Veyron 16.4.  The most notable feature is a removable tinted glass roof.
3. Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita ($5 million): “Trevita” translates to “Three White,” which makes sense since only three were made and they are covered in diamonds.  The ultimate in luxury.
2. Maybach Exelero ($8 million): A German model commissioned by Fulda Tyres to use as a reference vehicle for testing new types of tires, it was based on Maybach’s classic 1930s sports cars.
1. Rolls Royce Silver Ghost ($75 million): Though not a production model, it is certainly the most expensive car in the world.  It is kept in a sealed room at BMW’s headquarters and is only removed to be displayed at Pebble Beach car shows.

Brad Paisley Hero Edition Corvette ZR1 Winner Announced

brad_paisley_hero_edition_corvette_1.jpg
Two one-of-a-kind Chevrolet Corvettes were given away recently at the Corvette Dream Giveaway, one of them being this 2010 Brad Paisley Hero Edition Corvette ZR1. The other was a 1967 Corvette convertible Sting Ray.
The draw was created to aid in the expansion of the Kids Wish Network’s “Hero” program and the Corvette Dream Giveaway’s lucky winner was Brian Landgren of Washington.
While a unique supercar-killer in its own right, this particular ZR1 received some tweaks from Lingenfelter Performance Engineering, squeezing out 720-hp, a nice increase over the factory’s 638-hp figure.
Unique features in the aesthetics department include country star Brad Paisley’s signature under the hood of the vehicle. The exterior of the 2010 ZR1 has been refinished in Ermine White, matching the 1967 Sting Ray that was also given away.
Inside the cockpit, a red interior with a ton of red accents contrasts the carbon fiber accessories.

The myth that surrounds it

1936 Delahaye 135 Competition Court Coupe

The myth that surrounds it

We go back over 40 years
to investigate the Yenko
Chevelle
. Therefore, its
427 cubic inch engine has
a solid lifter camshaft
giving the V8 a choppy
idle that throbs out its
dual exhaust.
With its 11:1 compression
ratio and using fuel as an
afterthought, a hit of the
throttle and the engine is
ready to do what it was
designed for and does best.
When punched off of the line, the 427 vibrates the entire car and the machine lunges
forward. The 4-speed Hurst shifter is a bit vague but the first to second gear change
lays down the second set of smoking black rubber marks. The tires of which would
be gone in short order if the driver lets the engine power for too long a period of time.
Off the throttle, the aggressive 336 degree duration cam makes pronounced
deceleration rumble and an occasional protesting backfire. And despite having
what is considered crude 1960s technology, the Yenko ‘Rat’ engine provides
an impressive top-end charge that is hard to match even by today’s larger mills.
As always, large cubic inches and pushrods deliver unique motoring punch!
And what about the myth surrounding the Yenko Chevelle? Motor Trend
Classic set the record straight by saying, “The myth is Don Yenko’s dealership
installed a special 425-horsepower 427 big-block into the 1969 Yenko Super Car
(sYc) Camaros and Chevelles. While the 1967-1968 Yenkos were “transplant”
cars – meaning Yenko physically swapped in new engines - the 1969 Yenkos
(excluding Nova) were not. Chevrolet actually offered a little-known internal
ordering program called the Central Office Production Order (COPO). This
order enabled the factory fitment of certain non-ROP (Regular Production
Order) engines. Available for the Chevelle in 1969 was option COPO 9562
along with option COPO 9561 for the Camaro. Although the COPO numbers
differed, the result was the same – a Tonawanda built 427-cubic-inch big-block
Chevrolet V-8 rated at 425 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque.”

2012 Chevrolet Corvette Centennial Edition Released

With Chevrolet celebrating their 100th anniversary, the time is right for yet another special edition Corvette, and the bowtie brand is happy to oblige fans of their slow-selling supercar with the 2012 Corvette Centennial Edition.
Available on every trim level, from the base car up to the ZR1, Centennial Edition cars will get special badging, blacked out wheels and exterior paint and most significantly, Magnetic Selective Ride Control, which allows the driver to adjust shock damping from the cockpit.
The first Centennial Edition, a Z06 model, will be auctioned by Barrett-Jackson, with proceeds going to charity. No wonder on pricing, but you can bet that it won’t be cheap.

Ford C-Max: A Mini Minivan

The Ford C-Max, just introduced at the Detroit auto show, will be offered with a bewildering number of powertrains -- and it will likely make headlines, as it marks Ford Motor Company̢۪s return to the minivan wars. But the seven-passenger C-Max is only one of the wide varieties of C-Max multi-activity vehicle models that will come to market here over the next two years

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT RIG SHOTS

Rig shots are striking and produce a great sense of motion. That’s why a lot of automotive photographers use this technique. Unfortunately, this has resulted in over saturation. I challenge you to show me one automotive magazine that doesn’t have at least one rig shot.
This over saturation might be the reason a lot of automotive shooters are weary about sharing the secret to this technique. But the majority of the photogs that are hush hush about this are more than likely threatened by new photographers that are coming into the market, using techniques such as this, and undercutting them. But here’s my take, photography is more than just a camera on a pole, there’s so much more to it. Anyone (especially you after you’ve read this article) can do a rig shot. But that doesn’t mean they have the creativity to make it look good. The ability to do a rig shot doesn’t make you a photographer.
I say to hell with it, show everyone how to do it. Level the playing field. It’ll force photographers to get more creative to stand out. And soon they’ll come out with newer, even better techniques. Ultimately, that’s better for everyone.
Now that that’s off my chest, let me get off my soap box and show you guys how to do this. There’s a couple ways to do it, but I’m going to tell you my way. Basically you mount a pole to the vehicle and the camera to the pole. Then you set a long exposure and push the car during the shot. Because the car and the camera are moving on the same plane and at the same speed, the car stays sharp and the background blurs by. The resulting image looks like it was taken at 100 mph when in truth, you only went a few feet while going less than 1 mph. To maintain some organization in this article I’m going to cover 3 sections: the rig, execution, and post processing.
The Rig
Here’s a list of what my rig consists of. I’ve done my best to attach links to places where you can purchase them:

Extension Pole
Just a regular run of the mill extension pole you would use for painting. I got this one at Home Depot. I grinded down the threads on the end of the pole so I could mount my ball head. Try not to extend it out too far during your rig shot. That causes instability, which in turn causes camera shake, which could result in blurry images. I’ve seen people use bigger aluminum piping for their pole instead which could be a good alternative, but you’ve got to keep in mind portability. I couldn’t find the exact pole I use at homedepot.com but you could shop for it here.
Ball Head
Ball Head
I use a Manfrotto Ball Head which I mount the camera to. I find it very easy to adjust. As another alternative, I’ve hear

Hybrid R36

There has been no end to the rumors of what the Nissan GT-R will become next, but the most credible rumor circulating in Japan right now is that a Nissan GT-R Hybrid is in development. The hybrid Godzilla would be part of the R36 generation of the GT-R. Sources close to the project tell us would likely debut in 2012 as a 2013 model with a pricetag around $100K.
The drivetrain for the 2013 Nissan GT-R Hybrid is expected to be a version of the hybrid system in the upcoming Nissan M35 Hybrid, but with a dramatic power increase and an all-wheel-drive layout. However, instead of a normally aspirated V6, the GT-R Hybrid would use a twin-turbocharged V6 just as the R35-derived Infiniti Essence concept did. It would be the same twin-turbo 3.8-liter V6 (VR38DETT) the GT-R uses today.
The target would be 440 horsepower for the hybrid application (versus 485 on today's GT-R), with an additional 160 hp coming from the electric motor -- the same one used on the Essence.
With 600 hp to go around, the hybrid GT-R would be just as quick as today's production GT-R, sources tell us. We also hear, though, that serious weight will need to be cut out of the car to offset the addition of the battery pack. And even with that dieting, the GT-R Hybrid is still expected to be heavier than today's car (3,800 pounds).
Fuel economy, though, is expected to be 25-30 mpg, which of course is the very point of building a Nissan GT-R Hybrid. If achievable in the real world, Nissan would have a convenient rebuttal to pundits who argue that supercars (and more generally, fun cars) will lose their relevance in the coming green era. -- Mak Tokuyama, reporting from Japan

Hybrid R36

Word from Japan indicates that the next generation Nissan GT-R could be a hybrid sports car.
Buzz is circulating the internet right now that there's a possibility that the next generation of Nissan GT-R will be powered by a 440HP gas engine coupled with a 160HP electric motor. The combination of the two means, in theory, that the vehicle will be a 600 HP monster that is both a great performer as well as a more fuel efficient vehicle. This is all comes from Japanese automotive magazine Best Car.
I have no doubts that whatever the next gen of GT-R is, it will be awesome.

There is also mention that it could be scaled down to near Honda CR-Z proportions in order to improve overall performance and efficiency.
More details will surely come, so stay tuned.

Evolutionary' R36 should be with us by 2013

Current R35 will be replaced around 2013
PistonHeads was at Nissan’s Nurburgring Technical Centre earlier this week, when VP of global product planning Andy Palmer paid a flying visit to show his support for the GT-R programme lead by Kazutoshi Mizuno. It was Andy’s first meeting with the Japanese GT-R ‘away team’ at the Nurburgring and, speaking informally to the assembled engineers and support staff, he spoke warmly of their achievements and reaffirmed Nissan’s commitment to the GT-R project.
“These are very hard times and, as you know, we have had to make cuts to many programmes,’ he told the team. ‘However, it is very important to Nissan that we remain able to offer a diverse range of vehicles from electric cars, to LCVs and the GT-R and we continue to fully support the work you are doing here.”
Speaking to PH later on – while waiting for a rapid ride around the Nurburgring circuit in a Spec-V development car – Andy confirmed that a model replacement programme was still in place in spite of the economic downturn, based on a roughly similar timescale to the Porsche replacement cycle. With the 911 GT2 being the car Nissan likes to benchmark, that puts a lifespan of 5-6 years on the current R35 - according to our rudimentary maths.
Unsurprisingly, Andy also confirmed to us that the next-generation GT-R will be an evolution of the current platform, and will therefore retain the twin-turbocharged V6 and rear transaxle configuration.
“In that respect, it’s not going to be a massive one-off investment,” Palmer told PH. “It’s more a case of putting a bit of money into the programme every year, to make sure we keep the GT-R where it needs to be.”

Fabrication of Radiator Ducting

One of the final steps we took to help cool the DSM engine was the fabrication and installation of ducting around the intercooler. This duct work would make sure all the air entering the "big mouth" bumper opening would be directed through the IC core first and then through to the radiator.

As can be seen from the pictures below, before adding the duct work there was a considerable gap between the IC and the radiator support frame. Add this to the large gap between the IC and the front bumper and the open sides to the bumper opening, and we have a nasty equation for turbulent flow.

IC to radiator frame gap Gap above IC Gap above IC Angled shot of IC gap

We can easily imagine from looking at the current IC installation how easy it would be for incoming air to be directed in every direction except through the radiator. The remedy to this is of course, ducting.

Home made sheet metal pressIn order to access the IC core, we first had to remove the front bumper. Once you've done this a couple times it gets to be routine and we had the urethane off in a matter of minutes. At this stage we began taking measurements of the gaps above, below, and to the sides of the IC. We opted to mount the ducting to the intercooler at the points where the IC brackets attach to the core. Convenient. Once the measurements were taken and the shapes were sketched onto the sheet metal that we purchased, we had to somehow bend the metal to spec. This is tricky, if you try to bend it by hand, there will be all sorts of creases and dings in the bend. Machine shops have a nice press for this reason. Since we didn't have access to a real press, we made our own. In the picture below, you can see our "press". It consisted of two planks of wood. We would line the edge up against the bench and then bend it against the two pieces of wood. This worked like a charm and was a nice economical solution to the problem at hand.

We ended up making the duct in several pieces to aid in the ease of installation and removal.

The lower scoop that runs along the bottom of the IC and prevents air from slipping through the gap in the bumper cover between the bottom of the intercooler and the bumper cover itself.
Lower duct attaches to the bottom of the IC
The top scoop that runs from the top of the IC to the underside of the plastic bumper and directs all the incoming air through the intercooler instead of letting it pass over it.
Upper duct runs underneath the plastic bumper and seals agains the bumper cover
The side walls of the duct were made by riveting the sides to the upper and lower portions of the duct once they were installed on the car.
The side of the duct shown connecting the upper and lower portions
The second upper section of the duct connects the top of the IC to the bodywork just fore of the radiator. This piece makes sure that all the air flowing through the intercooler goes right into the radiator instead of over, around, or just swirling around in the bumper.

Lastly, once all the ducting was trimmed to fit, we used pipe insulations to seal the edges of the duct against the bumper and sheet metal of the car to make sure no air escaped.

This duct should help in cooling the engine by ensuring that as much air as possible is reaching the radiator and theoretically will improve the aerodynamics of the car. In addition we hope to improve the overall efficiency of the intercooler as the ducting should provide a nice smooth flow through the core instead of the turbulent flow experienced without the duct. Once we get a chance to really tune the car we will have a better idea of any real performance gains this mod offers.

On a side note, while we were in the process of making duct work for the IC and radiator, we took the chance to add a small connector piece from the existing cold air intake to the bumper cover itself. This should ensure all the air entering the bumper opening goes into the air box and not just around the cold air intake pipe. We also fabbed up a small sheet to sit in the bottom of the air box and seal off the excess openings through the frame and only allow air from the cold air pipe into the air box.
